To create both softness and protection you can use both at the same time. Simply place the featherbed first, and cover the featherbed and the mattress with the full size mattress pad. Keep in mind that the featherbed will add extra height to your bed, therefore, you must make sure that the protector will be big enough to cover the mattress and the featherbed entirely.
